21 Acres Farm is Salmon-Safe Certified!

salmon safe logoIn keeping with our commitment to sustainable growing practices and land stewardship, 21 Acres Farm is now Salmon-Safe certified.  Salmon-Safe is an emerging Northwest eco-label that recognizes farmers who protect water quality and habitat for fish and wildlife.

Salmon-Safe recognized 21 Acres as a model of good stewardship and sustainable farming practices, specifically for our work to protect and restore our waterways, prevent soil erosion, use natural methods of weed and pest control, conserve water through efficient irrigation practices, and promote native biodiversity throughout our farm.

21 Acres is in the Lake Washington-Cedar River watershed.  The waterways that flow through our property drain into Sammamish Slough and, eventually, to the Sammamish river,  an important ecosystem for native salmon and trout and many other species of fish and wildlife.  The farm is working hard to make sure that our practices do not negatively impact the health of the watershed and actually improve the environment through active measures such as planting of streamside buffers and hedgerows.

Salmon-Safe certification is a natural fit for 21 Acres because it not only assures us that our practices are helping to protect the environment, but, as an educational organization, it helps us teach others about the connections between good farming practices and  protection of water quality, fish and wildlife habitat, and native biodiversity.

The Salmon-Safe Program was founded in Oregon in 1997. Stewardship Partners, a non-profit conservation organization, launched the program in Washington in 2004 and is working with farmers across a variety of sectors in different watersheds around the state.  For more information, see www.stewardshippartners.org.
