Growing Healthy Soils & Communities with Biochar

biochar 2013 graphicBioChar is a highly beneficial for of charcoal that is created by heating organic material at high temperatures with low oxygen exposure. This process sequesters carbon which is preserved in soil for thousands of years. The end result: clean energy, healthy soil with increased fertility, reduced risk of water table contamination, and heightened agricultural productivity.

Participants will have the opportunity to get involved in four main activities:

  1. Making biochar using various type of biomass including bamboo, wood and wood pallets, RCG, blackberry cane, and others
  2. Learning about biochar science and technology
  3. Operating simply biochar stoves. 
  4. Hands-on activities to incorporate your final biochar product into the soil at our 6 acre farmstead.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:  If anyone wants to help out it would be appreciated. A work party is planned on March 23 from 9-noon.
