Market staff venture to SAgE farm to pitch in

Laurel first came to us as a dedicated volunteer working in the 21 Acres kitchen helping Asako and Jak with events, food-to-go and with processing — she was up for helping with anything that needed doing. She then became indispensible to the Farm Market and started as an employee there.
On a recent Monday morning, the three Market Staff took a very short walk over to SAgE Farms, right behind 21 Acres. SAgE is 8 acres of organic farmland, half of which is sub leased to new and beginning farmers.
SAgE stands for Sustainable Agriculture Student Farm. They partner with the University of Washington/Bothell and Edmonds Community College and provide classroom space for beginning farmers.
SAgE Farm is managed by Perry (real name is Persis – think old-fashioned name of Persistence. She is a third generation Persis in her family!) She runs the operation with the help of a (very) small handful of volunteers. If you are looking for a wonderful opportunity to invest your time in local, organic farming, let us know. Perry and the SAgE project are well worth your time.
We (the Market Staff) spent our time at SAgE with early spring chores. We started seeds in trays for a variety of summer (crookneck and zucchini) and winter squashes (gold nugget, delicata, acorn, blue hubbard and dwarf), cucumbers and several pumpkin varieties – all will be started in the greenhouse and then transplanted to the fields. With our wet winter and spring there is an extra helping of mud in the fields; we spent time moving and spreading chips to make a path sloping up to the new site for the greenhouse. This makes the greenhouse more wheelbarrow accessible. Simplifying operations is very important especially when helping hands are in short supply.
Lorna, one of 6 incubator farmers associated with SAgE Farms, was onsite during our morning visit. She will be growing Filipino vegetables on a quarter acre plot – watch for her produce in the 21 Acres Farm Market this summer. She will be happy to share some of her recipes too!
