No prior farm experience required. SUMMARY:Let’s Dig in the Dirt: Easy Projects to Jump Start Your Garden
DESCRIPTION:Do you have a “blah” yard that you’d like to enliven with more garden areas? Did you recently move into a new home and don’t know how to get started working on the landscape? Are you unable to decide what to plant? \nChristopher Cox is an avid DIY gardener and landscaper\, and in this free talk he will share a few fundamental garden projects that you can do to get momentum building towards your own garden haven\, even if you have zero experience or think you have a brown thumb. \nWith a combination of common sense\, lived experience\, and hands on practical knowledge (all shared with humility\, encouragement and an eye toward sustainable environments)\, he hopes to help you become addicted to working in your garden (just like he is at home!). \nWe will cover some easy planting projects\, basic landscaping projects\, and a few fun purchases you might choose to make to celebrate nature and feel more invested in your own home\, whether you live in an apartment or have four acres. \nSome of the projects are quick (one to three hours)\, and some might take you a weekend. They have owned the property in North Seattle since 2013. Christopher has been working over the course of a dozen years (and counting) to create a garden that lives up to his inspirations: cottage gardens\, wildlife and pollinator habitat gardens\, and gardens with four seasons of foliage and flowering interest (with a dash of food forest\, arts whimsy\, and private urban sanctuary to boot). \nAlong the way\, the garden became the dominant feature of Christopher’s life\, a pursuit that rewards with ever-increasing beauty and connection to nature. \n

DESCRIPTION:Spend the day at 21 Acres with local basket weaver\, Erin Cox\, and learn a variety of basketry techniques while getting to know some of the weave-able plants that grow in the PNW.  \nAttention all adventurous weavers…who among you likes a little whimsy and is ready to let the willow speak to you? Who comes back from every hike or neighborhood walk with new natural goodies in their pockets? (a seed pod…cool rock…you know!) \nIf this is you…come make a wild weave treasure catcher. We’ll build our foundations using the random weave technique with rehydrated willow rods. Then it’s time to play. If you want to stick with ONLY locally farmed and forage materials we’ll have vines\, bark\, cedar cones\, cordage making supplies\, dried flowers and seed pods and other fun things to play with. If you want to branch out to other materials\, I have half a dozen different natural twines and some surprises to play with. \nEvery wild weave will be different\, so let your imagination go wild and tell your inner critic to be quiet! \nThe fun doesn’t end when you leave class…you now have a home for all your wild goodies. Decorate with flowers\, seedpods\, feathers\, mementos – whatever makes you happy. Even change them up with the season! \nI can’t wait to see what YOU create! \nThe maximum class size is 10 students\, minimum 6 students. Minimum age is 14 for this workshop. The workshop will be held in the downstairs meeting room next to the 21 Acres Farm Market. \nThe fee is $85. DESCRIPTION:Spend the day at 21 Acres with local basket weaver\, Erin Cox\, and learn a variety of basketry techniques while getting to know some of the weave-able plants that grow in the PNW.  \nErin has been drawn to macrame for years. Many of the skills and projects can and do crossover with natural weaving. But a traditional macrame project with handwoven plant cordage instead of store-bought cotton rope would take a reeeeaaaallly long time to make. Super satisfying but way too long for a workshop. \nInsert shredded cattail – now we can make the background curtain in a flash and spend our time adding decorative twining\, knotting\, beads\, braiding and decorations on top. Everyone will learn the technique for making natural cordage\, a 5 strand flat braid\, and more! \nAll workshop materials have been harvested by hand sustainably and responsibly in the Puget Sound area. \nClass size max: 12 students | 6 minimum. DESCRIPTION:Dry farming is a water-smart\, climate-adapted growing practice here in the PNW\, and in this era of rising temperatures and extended periods of drought due to climate change\, dry-farmed produce offers an important opportunity to bolster local food systems and our home gardens.   \nFarm Manager\, Ansley Roberts\, will lead a special farm tour focused on the dry farming trials here at 21 Acres\, including tomatoes\, squash\, and dry beans. Your help supports local food systems by increasing farm productivity; building habitat for animals\, birds\, and insects; decreasing stormwater runoff; and storing carbon. \nDepending on the time of year\, volunteers can expect to learn about vernal wetlands\, crop planting and harvesting\, local pollinator species\, cover crops\, bioswales\, hugelkultur\, noxious weeds\, and more – all while engaging in collaborative hands-on activities. No prior farm experience required. All tools provided. \nWhat to know before you register: \nIf you are a new volunteer with 21 Acres\, please fill out a volunteer application before arriving \n-Activities include seeding\, planting\, weeding\, mulching\, wheelbarrowing\, and more.\n-Friends and family 13 years and older are welcome to join! SUMMARY:Wild Weave with Willow
DESCRIPTION:Spend the day at 21 Acres with local basket weaver\, Erin Cox\, and learn a variety of basketry techniques while getting to know some of the weave-able plants that grow in the PNW.  \nAttention all adventurous weavers…who among you likes a little whimsy and is ready to let the willow speak to you? Who comes back from every hike or neighborhood walk with new natural goodies in their pockets? (a seed pod…cool rock…you know!) \nIf this is you…come make a wild weave treasure catcher. We’ll build our foundations using the random weave technique with rehydrated willow rods. Then it’s time to play. If you want to stick with ONLY locally farmed and forage materials we’ll have vines\, bark\, cedar cones\, cordage making supplies\, dried flowers and seed pods and other fun things to play with. If you want to branch out to other materials\, I have half a dozen different natural twines and some surprises to play with. \nEvery wild weave will be different\, so let your imagination go wild and tell your inner critic to be quiet! \nThe fun doesn’t end when you leave class…you now have a home for all your wild goodies. Decorate with flowers\, seedpods\, feathers\, mementos – whatever makes you happy. Even change them up with the season! \nI can’t wait to see what YOU create! \nThe maximum class size is 10 students\, minimum 6 students. Minimum age is 14 for this workshop. The workshop will be held in the downstairs meeting room next to the 21 Acres Farm Market. \nThe fee is $85. However\, if you want to sell or give your spot to a friend\, I’m happy to welcome someone else in your place. Due to the nature of the projects (materials/soaking\, etc) and the small class sizes\, I’m unable to support refunds or credits. \nAbout your teacher: Erin Cox is a talented and knowledgeable weaver\, crafter and artist with a special reverence for plants. She’s also been a willow farmer since 2024\, when she joined the SnoValley Tilth Experience Farming Project in Carnation. She honors the cultural significance of farms\, which historically have provided much more than food\, including baskets\, trellises\, medicine\, wool\, and more. Her classes showcase a variety of unique weaving projects\, leveraging some plants that you’ll see here on the farm.
