DESCRIPTION:Do you have a “blah” yard that you’d like to enliven with more garden areas? Did you recently move into a new home and don’t know how to get started working on the landscape? Are you unable to decide what to plant? \nChristopher Cox is an avid DIY gardener and landscaper\, and in this free talk he will share a few fundamental garden projects that you can do to get momentum building towards your own garden haven\, even if you have zero experience or think you have a brown thumb. \nWith a combination of common sense\, lived experience\, and hands on practical knowledge (all shared with humility\, encouragement and an eye toward sustainable environments)\, he hopes to help you become addicted to working in your garden (just like he is at home!). \nWe will cover some easy planting projects\, basic landscaping projects\, and a few fun purchases you might choose to make to celebrate nature and feel more invested in your own home\, whether you live in an apartment or have four acres. \nSome of the projects are quick (one to three hours)\, and some might take you a weekend. We’ll build our foundations using the random weave technique with rehydrated willow rods. Then it’s time to play. If you want to stick with ONLY locally farmed and forage materials we’ll have vines\, bark\, cedar cones\, cordage making supplies\, dried flowers and seed pods and other fun things to play with. If you want to branch out to other materials\, I have half a dozen different natural twines and some surprises to play with. \nEvery wild weave will be different\, so let your imagination go wild and tell your inner critic to be quiet! \nThe fun doesn’t end when you leave class…you now have a home for all your wild goodies. Decorate with flowers\, seedpods\, feathers\, mementos – whatever makes you happy. Many of the skills and projects can and do crossover with natural weaving. But a traditional macrame project with handwoven plant cordage instead of store-bought cotton rope would take a reeeeaaaallly long time to make. Super satisfying but way too long for a workshop. \nInsert shredded cattail – now we can make the background curtain in a flash and spend our time adding decorative twining\, knotting\, beads\, braiding and decorations on top. Everyone will learn the technique for making natural cordage\, a 5 strand flat braid\, and more! \nAll workshop materials have been harvested by hand sustainably and responsibly in the Puget Sound area. \nClass size max: 12 students | 6 minimum. With at least 30 native species and 100’s of non-native cultivars to choose from – consider adding fast growing\, dynamic\, and resilient willow to your urban garden. \nNo\, I’m not talking about the swaying branches of weeping willow. I’m talking about it’s smaller multi-stemmed Salix relatives that can offer color\, coverage\, garden support materials\, and basketry or wild crafting supplies. There are hundreds of willow species and hundreds more cultivars – there are so many willows to get to know. \nLearn more about how willow grows\, what it needs to thrive\, how to keep it happy (and not in your sewer!)\, and ways you can take advantage of its plentiful and annually renewable rods: trellises\, living fences\, wattle fences\, cloches\, homemade rooting hormone\, obelisks\, shade\, bark\, baskets\, bean teepees\, wreathes\, winter interest\, cut flowers\, and more. \nLocally grown organic willow cuttings (several varieties) will be available for sale. $2/cutting (industry standard is $2.50-$3.50 per cutting plus shipping) while supplies last. \nAbout your teacher: Erin Cox is a talented and knowledgeable weaver\, crafter and artist with a special reverence for plants. We’ll work with dried\, semi-dry and fresh materials to create a one-of-kind celebration of winter color that leverages the virtues of both plants.  \nWe’ll make a hoop with long slender flexible willow rods\, create a framework with ribs and weave fresh stems of dogwood and willow. All materials are locally and sustainably harvested by hand. Your finished tray will be approximately 12 inches across. \nClass size maximum: 12 students. DESCRIPTION:This workshop is part of a 21 Acres Guest Artist Series. We are pleased to make our space available to a handful of local artists to teach their creative classes.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCreate your very own holiday cards! In this four-hour class\, mixed media artist Rebecca Jordan will teach you the secrets of block printing. This popular (and surprisingly simple!) craft is a great way to express yourself. \nYou’ll learn how to use carving tools\, how to design your own cards\, and you will leave with as many greeting cards as you can print. If you’d rather\, we will have blocks and hand-carved stamps available for you to use. Mix and match for your perfect notes to send to loved ones. \nAll supplies are provided. In this all-ages-welcome workshop\, create a small book using a single piece of paper. Your zine can be a how-to guide\, an art book\, a list of your favorite foods\, or anything else you can think of. \nWe’ll begin by talking about what a zine is and sharing different zine formats. Then\, get creating! We’ll have collage materials\, markers\, stamps\, and more to create your booklet. Browse our zine collections to get ideas! \nAll ages are welcome. We ask that students under the age of 12 have a ticketed adult accompanying them. \nAbout your instructors \nEmily Donnel (she/her) is pursuing her passion of teaching by offering crafting\, sewing\, and nature classes in and around Woodinville. As a life-long Woodinville resident\, she feels strongly connected to the community and the beautiful forests that define the area. DESCRIPTION:Do you enjoy capturing the beauty you see around you with a camera? Whether you’re a beginner photographer or have lots of photo experience under your belt\, you’re invited to join us for a casual Fall Photo Walk on the 21 Acres farm.  \nYour facilitator will be 21 Acres Operations Coordinator\, Val McKinley\, who has worked professionally as a photographer for many years\, focusing her camera on people\, events\, and the natural world. \nShe’ll introduce you to some of her favorite places on our regenerative farm and in the restored wetlands to photograph autumn’s colors\, textures and patterns. \nAll camera formats are welcome\, including cell phones. You’ll have the opportunity to ask photography questions\, receive feedback on your images\, and best of all\, learn from each other. \nJoin us in the lobby on the second floor of our building 10-15 minutes before the start of the photo walk. Please dress for the weather; the paths will likely be muddy\, so appropriate footwear is recommended. Note: The 21 Acres farm is not ADA accessible. \nMinimum age for attendees is 16. Space is limited\, so be sure to sign up early via Eventbrite. \nThis is one of many free events taking place on October 12th as part of the Sammamish Valley Harvest Celebration at 21 Acres\, including a presentation at 1:00 by photographer/author\, Robert Dash\, who recently published a beautiful new book\, Food Planet Future. For this class\, we’ll use a coptic stitch bind\, which has an open spine and allows your sketchbook creation to lay flat. Expand your creativity and take home your unique creation in this 3-hour workshop. \nAll materials are provided\, though you are welcome to bring your own scrapbooking paper for your covers. (If you don’t have any\, I have plenty). In this class\, you will learn different techniques for making botanical prints\, including monotype gel plate printing\, hammered printing\, leaf rubbings\, and more to create unique art from seasonal materials. \nNo matter what the season\, nature has bountiful materials—we will use seasonal botanicals collected each month. Catalogue what you find in your nature sketchbook\, or use botanical elements in your next mixed media piece. This fun\, hands-on class is suitable for beginning and intermediate printmakers. \nAll materials are provided for this class\, though you are welcome to bring your own botanicals to print.
