SUMMARY:Sammamish Valley 10th Annual Seed Swap
DESCRIPTION:What do you dream of growing in your garden this year? Take your place in a movement to prevent seed species extinction by growing\, saving\, and sharing seeds. \nThis is our 10th year! The Sammamish Valley Seed Swap takes place during the entire month of March\, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and is sponsored by the Sammamish Valley Grange here in Woodinville. Visit the alcove next to the 21 Acres Farm Market entrance to take seeds or leave seeds at this self-serve seed swap. \nHow does the seed swap work?\nBring Seeds \nBring your saved seeds\, either in their original commercial packaging or your own well-marked\, small envelope or container. Include the plant name\, year collected\, and planting and growing information. Seeds should be cleaned of hulls and debris. Seeds should be non-MO\, non-hybrid\, and no older than 3 years. Sort your donated seeds into the boxes provided that are labeled by plant category and species. Don’t have seeds? No problem! \nSwap for Seeds \nTake seeds that you need for your own garden. Bring recycled envelopes\, small jars or other little containers or bags\, along with a pen\, marker and tape to label your seeds with name\, variety and planting information. \nPlant Your Spring Garden \nHave fun with family\, friends and neighbors as you sow and tend to your spring garden. Come back often during March to see what community members have brought to the swap. \n\nTake Photos and Share \nWe’d love to see photos and hear about how your plants are growing. If you post on social media\, please tag with #sammamishvalleyseedswap – you’ll be entered in a drawing to win a fun\, seedy prize!

SUMMARY:Let’s Dig in the Dirt: Easy Projects to Jump Start Your Garden
DESCRIPTION:Do you have a “blah” yard that you’d like to enliven with more garden areas? Did you recently move into a new home and don’t know how to get started working on the landscape? Are you unable to decide what to plant? \nChristopher Cox is an avid DIY gardener and landscaper\, and in this free talk he will share a few fundamental garden projects that you can do to get momentum building towards your own garden haven\, even if you have zero experience or think you have a brown thumb. \nWith a combination of common sense\, lived experience\, and hands on practical knowledge (all shared with humility\, encouragement and an eye toward sustainable environments)\, he hopes to help you become addicted to working in your garden (just like he is at home!). \nWe will cover some easy planting projects\, basic landscaping projects\, and a few fun purchases you might choose to make to celebrate nature and feel more invested in your own home\, whether you live in an apartment or have four acres. \nSome of the projects are quick (one to three hours)\, and some might take you a weekend. But once you start gaining some confidence\, you will love working in your own evolving green space. \nHere are a few of the projects: \nEasy water garden for your patio \nMake a mulch path \nTake out your least favorite shrub or tree (addition by subtraction!) \nPlant a sedum garden \nPlant a tree or shrub in the middle of your lawn \nMake a bulb garden \nMini rock garden or stepping stones \nClick the link below to register directly with the teacher.  \nAbout your teacher and Willows End Garden and Nursery: Willows End is the garden (and fledgling nursery) at the home of Christopher and Erin Cox. They have owned the property in North Seattle since 2013. Christopher has been working over the course of a dozen years (and counting) to create a garden that lives up to his inspirations: cottage gardens\, wildlife and pollinator habitat gardens\, and gardens with four seasons of foliage and flowering interest (with a dash of food forest\, arts whimsy\, and private urban sanctuary to boot). \nAlong the way\, the garden became the dominant feature of Christopher’s life\, a pursuit that rewards with ever-increasing beauty and connection to nature. \n

SUMMARY:"Off-Season Seed Reading" Book Club - 5 sessions
DESCRIPTION:Co-hosted by 21 Acres and the Woodinville Farmers Market\, this free\, five-session “Off-Season Seed Reading” series will be a fresh and easy take on the typical book club. \nMark your calendars for January 10\, 17\, 24\, 31 and February 7\, from 10 AM to noon in the 21 Acres Sustainability library\, when we’ll explore How Carrots Won the Trojan War: Curious (but True) Stories of Common Vegetables by Rebecca Rupp. \nOver five weeks\, we’ll start reading the book together aloud as a group\, and you can finish in your own time. No requirement to buy the book! Join us for this second annual “Off-Season Seed Reading” Book Club during the slower season for a lively conversation around local food\, farming and other related topics. \nAccording to Goodreads\, “How Carrots Won the Trojan War is a delightful collection of little-known stories about the origins\, legends\, and historical significance of 23 of the world’s most popular vegetables. Curious cooks\, gardeners\, and casual readers alike will be fascinated by these far-fetched tales of their favorite foods’ pasts. Readers will discover why Roman gladiators were massaged with onion juice before battle\, how celery contributed to Casanova’s conquests\, how peas almost poisoned General Washington\, and why some seventeenth-century turnips were considered degenerate.” \nCancellation policy: \nSafety is our first priority. If existing or anticipated weather conditions pose a moderate to high risk to visitors and staff\, we will make the decision to cancel this event. In the event of cancellation\, registered attendees will be informed by email as soon as possible. Please make sure that the email address you provide during registration is accurate. \nIf you are feeling sick\, we kindly ask that you respect the safety of yourself and others by not coming to campus. Send an email to generalinfo@21acres.org or call us at (425) 481-1500 if you are unable to attend.

SUMMARY:Wild Weave with Willow
DESCRIPTION:Spend the day at 21 Acres with local basket weaver\, Erin Cox\, and learn a variety of basketry techniques while getting to know some of the weave-able plants that grow in the PNW.  \nAttention all adventurous weavers…who among you likes a little whimsy and is ready to let the willow speak to you? Who comes back from every hike or neighborhood walk with new natural goodies in their pockets? (a seed pod…cool rock…you know!) \nIf this is you…come make a wild weave treasure catcher. We’ll build our foundations using the random weave technique with rehydrated willow rods. Then it’s time to play. If you want to stick with ONLY locally farmed and forage materials we’ll have vines\, bark\, cedar cones\, cordage making supplies\, dried flowers and seed pods and other fun things to play with. If you want to branch out to other materials\, I have half a dozen different natural twines and some surprises to play with. \nEvery wild weave will be different\, so let your imagination go wild and tell your inner critic to be quiet! \nThe fun doesn’t end when you leave class…you now have a home for all your wild goodies. Decorate with flowers\, seedpods\, feathers\, mementos – whatever makes you happy. Even change them up with the season! \nI can’t wait to see what YOU create! \nThe maximum class size is 10 students\, minimum 6 students. Minimum age is 14 for this workshop. The workshop will be held in the downstairs meeting room next to the 21 Acres Farm Market. \nThe fee is $85. Click the link below to register directly with the teacher\, Erin Cox.  \nClass registration is NON-REFUNDABLE. However\, if you want to sell or give your spot to a friend\, I’m happy to welcome someone else in your place. Due to the nature of the projects (materials/soaking\, etc) and the small class sizes\, I’m unable to support refunds or credits. \nAbout your teacher: Erin Cox is a talented and knowledgeable weaver\, crafter and artist with a special reverence for plants. She’s also been a willow farmer since 2024\, when she joined the SnoValley Tilth Experience Farming Project in Carnation. She honors the cultural significance of farms\, which historically have provided much more than food\, including baskets\, trellises\, medicine\, wool\, and more. Her classes showcase a variety of unique weaving projects\, leveraging some plants that you’ll see here on the farm. SUMMARY:Cattail Wall-Hangings
DESCRIPTION:Spend the day at 21 Acres with local basket weaver\, Erin Cox\, and learn a variety of basketry techniques while getting to know some of the weave-able plants that grow in the PNW.  \nErin has been drawn to macrame for years. Many of the skills and projects can and do crossover with natural weaving. But a traditional macrame project with handwoven plant cordage instead of store-bought cotton rope would take a reeeeaaaallly long time to make. Super satisfying but way too long for a workshop. \nInsert shredded cattail – now we can make the background curtain in a flash and spend our time adding decorative twining\, knotting\, beads\, braiding and decorations on top. Everyone will learn the technique for making natural cordage\, a 5 strand flat braid\, and more! \nAll workshop materials have been harvested by hand sustainably and responsibly in the Puget Sound area. \nClass size max: 12 students | 6 minimum. Age minimum: 12 with accompanying adult (both attendees should purchase a ticket). The workshop will be held in the downstairs meeting room next to the 21 Acres Farm Market. \nThe fee is $71.60. Click the link below to register directly with the teacher\, Erin Cox.  \nClass registration is NON-REFUNDABLE. However\, if you want to sell or give your spot to a friend\, I’m happy to welcome someone else in your place. SUMMARY:Farm Tour: Focus on Dry Farming
DESCRIPTION:Dry farming is a water-smart\, climate-adapted growing practice here in the PNW\, and in this era of rising temperatures and extended periods of drought due to climate change\, dry-farmed produce offers an important opportunity to bolster local food systems and our home gardens.   \nFarm Manager\, Ansley Roberts\, will lead a special farm tour focused on the dry farming trials here at 21 Acres\, including tomatoes\, squash\, and dry beans. You’ll learn how farmers grow produce varieties that need zero irrigation and taste absolutely delicious.  \nIn-person tours of the 21 Acres Farm are a great way to explore how agroecology\, soil health and land stewardship can build resilient local food economies and support direct climate action. Join us and uncover what farming in the Sammamish Valley looks like. Bring your questions! \nClick the link to register for this free tour. Details will be provided via Eventbrite after registration. \nThe Farm Walk is not ADA Accessible. Dress for the weather; wearing boots is strongly recommended. \nCANCELLATION POLICY \nSafety is our first priority. If existing or anticipated conditions pose a moderate to high risk to visitors and staff\, we will make the decision to cancel this event. \nIn the event of cancellation\, registered attendees will be informed of cancellations by 21 Acres as soon as possible. But a traditional macrame project with handwoven plant cordage instead of store-bought cotton rope would take a really\, really long time to make. \nClass size max: 12 students\, 6 minimum. The workshop will be held in the downstairs meeting room next to the 21 Acres Farm Market. \nThe fee is $75. You can follow her on her Instagram account or visit her at  www.fieldandforestcrafts.com  \n

SUMMARY:Growing Willow in an Urban Garden
DESCRIPTION:Spend the day at 21 Acres with local basket weaver\, Erin Cox\, and learn a variety of basketry techniques while getting to know some of the weave-able plants that grow in the PNW.  \nWillow loves the Pacific Northwest – not too hot\, not too cold and lots of water. With at least 30 native species and 100’s of non-native cultivars to choose from – consider adding fast growing\, dynamic\, and resilient willow to your urban garden. \nNo\, I’m not talking about the swaying branches of weeping willow. I’m talking about it’s smaller multi-stemmed Salix relatives that can offer color\, coverage\, garden support materials\, and basketry or wild crafting supplies. There are hundreds of willow species and hundreds more cultivars – there are so many willows to get to know. \nLearn more about how willow grows\, what it needs to thrive\, how to keep it happy (and not in your sewer!)\, and ways you can take advantage of its plentiful and annually renewable rods: trellises\, living fences\, wattle fences\, cloches\, homemade rooting hormone\, obelisks\, shade\, bark\, baskets\, bean teepees\, wreathes\, winter interest\, cut flowers\, and more. \nLocally grown organic willow cuttings (several varieties) will be available for sale. $2/cutting (industry standard is $2.50-$3.50 per cutting plus shipping) while supplies last. \nAbout your teacher: Erin Cox is a talented and knowledgeable weaver\, crafter and artist with a special reverence for plants. She honors the cultural significance of farms\, which historically have provided much more than food\, including baskets\, trellises\, medicine\, wool\, and more. Her classes showcase a variety of unique weaving projects\, leveraging some plants that you’ll see here on the farm. SUMMARY:Winter Color Catalan Tray
DESCRIPTION:Spend the day at 21 Acres with local basket weaver\, Erin Cox\, and learn a variety of basketry techniques while getting to know some of the weave-able plants that grow in the PNW.  \nCome celebrate our native Cornus sericea (red-twig or red osier dogwood) and native Salix species (willow) at their peak winter color and learn a new weaving technique\, using tension and a simple over-under weave. We’ll work with dried\, semi-dry and fresh materials to create a one-of-kind celebration of winter color that leverages the virtues of both plants.  \nWe’ll make a hoop with long slender flexible willow rods\, create a framework with ribs and weave fresh stems of dogwood and willow. All materials are locally and sustainably harvested by hand. Your finished tray will be approximately 12 inches across. \nClass size maximum: 12 students. Minimum age: 14 years old \nClass registration is NON-REFUNDABLE. However\, if you want to sell or give your spot to a friend\, I’m happy to welcome someone else in your place. Send an email to volunteer@21acres.org or call us at (425) 481-1500 if you are unable to attend.

SUMMARY:Block Printed Holiday Cards with Rebecca Jordan
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is part of a 21 Acres Guest Artist Series. We are pleased to make our space available to a handful of local artists to teach their creative classes.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCreate your very own holiday cards! In this four-hour class\, mixed media artist Rebecca Jordan will teach you the secrets of block printing. This popular (and surprisingly simple!) craft is a great way to express yourself. \nYou’ll learn how to use carving tools\, how to design your own cards\, and you will leave with as many greeting cards as you can print. If you’d rather\, we will have blocks and hand-carved stamps available for you to use. Mix and match for your perfect notes to send to loved ones. \nAll supplies are provided. This class is best for students 12 and up. \nRebecca Jordan (she/her) is a speculative author and artist telling stories about the natural world and exploring alien ones. She is a watercolor artist\, illustrator\, printmaker\, science writer\, and experimenter. In her free time she draws bugs\, gardens\, and makes weird stuff under the pseudonym Carapace Illustration.

SUMMARY:Make a Zine!
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is part of a 21 Acres Guest Artist Series. We are pleased to make our space available to a handful of local artists to teach their creative classes.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAnyone can make a zine! In this all-ages-welcome workshop\, create a small book using a single piece of paper. Your zine can be a how-to guide\, an art book\, a list of your favorite foods\, or anything else you can think of. \nWe’ll begin by talking about what a zine is and sharing different zine formats. Then\, get creating! We’ll have collage materials\, markers\, stamps\, and more to create your booklet. Browse our zine collections to get ideas! \nAll ages are welcome. We ask that students under the age of 12 have a ticketed adult accompanying them. \nAbout your instructors \nEmily Donnel (she/her) is pursuing her passion of teaching by offering crafting\, sewing\, and nature classes in and around Woodinville. As a life-long Woodinville resident\, she feels strongly connected to the community and the beautiful forests that define the area. When not teaching\, she can be found reading\, gardening\, walking with her dog\, and supporting local community projects like Save the Hooven Forest. \nRebecca Jordan (she/they) is a speculative author and artist telling stories about the natural world and exploring alien ones. She is a watercolor artist\, illustrator\, science writer\, zinester\, and experimenter. In her free time RJ draws bugs\, cuddles her cats\, gardens\, and makes weird stuff. See more and connect @beccaquibbles.

SUMMARY:Ink & Watercolor Illustration with Rebecca Jordan
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is part of a 21 Acres Guest Artist Series. We are pleased to make our space available to a handful of local artists to teach their creative classes.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nInk and watercolor: a match made in heaven! \nWe’ll begin with markmaking techniques with waterproof ink\, followed by a brief introduction to watercolor medium. Then\, we’ll choose public domain references (or bring in your own reference image) to take what you’ve learned and render your own 8×10″ illustration. \nStudents will walk away with a better understanding of ink\, watercolor\, and how those mediums play together–as well as all the skills you need to continue creating your own dynamic illustrations! \nRebecca Jordan is a speculative author and artist telling stories about the natural world and exploring alien ones.
