SUMMARY:21 Acres Farm Tour: Focus on Seeds
DESCRIPTION:Come learn all about seed starting with 21 Acres Farm Manager Ansley Roberts\, who will share the ins and outs of seed selection\, how to set yourself up for seed starting success\, and how our seeding and planting practices at 21 Acres fit into our wider agroecological practices. \nYou’ll also get to apply your new knowledge with some hands-on experience in our greenhouse by planting a seed to take home. This is our first monthly farm tour of 2026! \nJoin us for an informative stroll around the 21 Acres farm and natural spaces to explore how agroecology\, soil health and land stewardship can build resilient local food economies and support direct climate action. You’ll visit our organic fields\, wetlands\, and much more as we uncover what farming looks like in the Sammamish Valley Agricultural Production District. Farming has never been more essential to our local and global communities. \nBring your questions! This interactive hour will be held in person on the 21 Acres campus. Meet us in the lobby on the second floor 10-15 minutes before the start of the tour. Details for the tour will be provided via Eventbrite after registration. \nNote: The Farm Tour is not ADA Accessible. Dress for the weather; the paths will likely be muddy\, so appropriate footwear is recommended. Space is limited for this free event; be sure to sign up via Eventbrite. \nNeed seeds for your garden? Be sure to stop by the 10th Annual Sammamish Valley Seed Swap next to the 21 Acres Farm Market entrance during the entire month of March! \nWant to get your hands dirty and learn more? Register for an upcoming Volunteer Farm Steward event later this spring and work with 21 Acres staff on a variety of seasonal farm and restoration projects that build soil health and maintain the farm during the growing season.

SUMMARY:Cooking Class: Tamales – Masa\, Fillings and Traditions
DESCRIPTION:Tamales are one of the oldest known prepared foods in the Americas\, with origins tracing back to ancient Mesoamerican civilizations including the Olmec\, Maya\, Aztec\, and Toltec cultures. Archaeological evidence suggests tamales were being made as early as 8000–5000 BCE. Portable\, nourishing\, and adaptable\, tamales served as essential sustenance for travelers\, warriors\, hunters\, and large community gatherings. \nBecause corn (maı́z) was considered a sacred crop in Mesoamerican belief systems\, tamales also held deep cultural importance. They were prepared for ceremonies\, offerings\, and celebrations\, symbolizing life\, renewal\, and community. Over centuries\, regional Klavors\, ingredients\, and wrapping materials evolved\, but the essential structure of a masa-Killed\, steamed bundle remained constant. \nToday\, tamales continue to be a cornerstone of Mexican\, Central American\, and Latinx cuisine\, enjoyed both as everyday food and for holidays such as Christmas\, New Year’s\, Las Posadas\, and Dı́a de los Muertos. The tradition of gathering family and friends to prepare tamales – known as a ‘tamalada’ – remains a cherished cultural practice. \nJoin us in the 21 Acres Kitchen to explore the art and science of traditional Mesoamerican tamales. Students will prepare fresh masa using whipped lard and chicken stock\, achieving the light and airy texture essential for authentic tamales. \nStudents will prepare a classic filling of pulled chicken with salsa verde\, layer and fold tamales in softened corn husks\, and steam them for approximately one hour. \nWhile the tamales steam\, students will prepare Champurrado\, a thick Mexican hot chocolate\, and assist Chef Ron in charring dried chiles to create Salsa Roja\, an essential pairing with tamales. \nStudents will share a hands-on workstation and receive personalized instruction from Chef Ron Askew. Key topics include understanding nixtamalization and masa preparation; balancing acidity\, heat\, and texture in salsas; and highlighting seasonal and local farm ingredients. \nRegistration fee: $70 per person. This class is open to students ages 8 to 108\, and the maximum class size is 12 students (6 workstations\, 2 participants per station). Pre-registration is required at the link below. \nAbout your teacher: Chef Ron brings over 40 years of global culinary experience from the Pacific Northwest\, Alaska\, Saipan\, and Hong Kong. SUMMARY:Let’s Dig in the Dirt: Easy Projects to Jump Start Your Garden
DESCRIPTION:Do you have a “blah” yard that you’d like to enliven with more garden areas? Did you recently move into a new home and don’t know how to get started working on the landscape? Are you unable to decide what to plant? \nChristopher Cox is an avid DIY gardener and landscaper\, and in this free talk he will share a few fundamental garden projects that you can do to get momentum building towards your own garden haven\, even if you have zero experience or think you have a brown thumb. \nWith a combination of common sense\, lived experience\, and hands on practical knowledge (all shared with humility\, encouragement and an eye toward sustainable environments)\, he hopes to help you become addicted to working in your garden (just like he is at home!). \nWe will cover some easy planting projects\, basic landscaping projects\, and a few fun purchases you might choose to make to celebrate nature and feel more invested in your own home\, whether you live in an apartment or have four acres. \nSome of the projects are quick (one to three hours)\, and some might take you a weekend. But once you start gaining some confidence\, you will love working in your own evolving green space. \nHere are a few of the projects: \nEasy water garden for your patio \nMake a mulch path \nTake out your least favorite shrub or tree (addition by subtraction!) \nPlant a sedum garden \nPlant a tree or shrub in the middle of your lawn \nMake a bulb garden \nMini rock garden or stepping stones \nClick the link below to register directly with the teacher.  \nAbout your teacher and Willows End Garden and Nursery: Willows End is the garden (and fledgling nursery) at the home of Christopher and Erin Cox. They have owned the property in North Seattle since 2013. Christopher has been working over the course of a dozen years (and counting) to create a garden that lives up to his inspirations: cottage gardens\, wildlife and pollinator habitat gardens\, and gardens with four seasons of foliage and flowering interest (with a dash of food forest\, arts whimsy\, and private urban sanctuary to boot). \nAlong the way\, the garden became the dominant feature of Christopher’s life\, a pursuit that rewards with ever-increasing beauty and connection to nature. \n

SUMMARY:"Off-Season Seed Reading" Book Club - 5 sessions
DESCRIPTION:Co-hosted by 21 Acres and the Woodinville Farmers Market\, this free\, five-session “Off-Season Seed Reading” series will be a fresh and easy take on the typical book club. \nMark your calendars for January 10\, 17\, 24\, 31 and February 7\, from 10 AM to noon in the 21 Acres Sustainability library\, when we’ll explore How Carrots Won the Trojan War: Curious (but True) Stories of Common Vegetables by Rebecca Rupp. \nOver five weeks\, we’ll start reading the book together aloud as a group\, and you can finish in your own time. No requirement to buy the book! Join us for this second annual “Off-Season Seed Reading” Book Club during the slower season for a lively conversation around local food\, farming and other related topics. \nAccording to Goodreads\, “How Carrots Won the Trojan War is a delightful collection of little-known stories about the origins\, legends\, and historical significance of 23 of the world’s most popular vegetables. Curious cooks\, gardeners\, and casual readers alike will be fascinated by these far-fetched tales of their favorite foods’ pasts. Readers will discover why Roman gladiators were massaged with onion juice before battle\, how celery contributed to Casanova’s conquests\, how peas almost poisoned General Washington\, and why some seventeenth-century turnips were considered degenerate.” \nCancellation policy: \nSafety is our first priority. If existing or anticipated weather conditions pose a moderate to high risk to visitors and staff\, we will make the decision to cancel this event. In the event of cancellation\, registered attendees will be informed by email as soon as possible. Please make sure that the email address you provide during registration is accurate. \nIf you are feeling sick\, we kindly ask that you respect the safety of yourself and others by not coming to campus. Send an email to generalinfo@21acres.org or call us at (425) 481-1500 if you are unable to attend.

SUMMARY:Cooking Class: Masa Tortillas and Fresh Salsa
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the 21 Acres kitchen to learn the art of making masa corn tortillas – then enjoy eating those fresh tortillas with a delicious salsa bar. During this two-hour class\, students will experience the process of preparing authentic masa tortillas and two classic salsas\, salsa verde and pico de gallo. A selection of seasonal farm products and pantry accompaniments from the 21 Acres Farm Market will be featured in both salsa recipes and self-serve salsa bar\, showcasing local flavors and sustainable ingredients. \nMasa tortillas trace their origins to ancient Mesoamerica as early as 500 BCE\, where indigenous peoples domesticated corn and discovered nixtamalization—a process that transformed corn into masa\, the dough used for flatbreads. These early tortillas served as a vital food source and carried profound cultural and spiritual meaning for civilizations such as the Aztecs and Maya. To learn more about the history and significance of masa\, check out this article in Salon magazine. \nOver time\, tortillas have continued to evolve and are a versatile vessel for meals both traditional and non\, for tacos and taquitos and even leftovers. According to Jorge Gaviria\, founder of the heirloom masa company Masienda\, “A tortilla is\, simply put\, a perfect food. It can be used as a utensil\, a wrapper\, or the starting point for many delicious preparations. A good tortilla\, made fresh and hot off the comal\, needs nothing more than a sprinkle of salt to be enjoyed.” \nEach pair of students will share a hands-on workstation and receive personalized instruction from Chef Ron Askew. Key topics include understanding nixtamalization and masa preparation; hands-on tortilla pressing and cooking; balancing acidity\, heat\, and texture in salsas; and highlighting seasonal and local farm ingredients. \nRegistration fee: $55 per person. Known for his passion for scratch cooking and food education\, he served 19 years as Executive Chef at Forest Ridge School in Bellevue\, where he built a vibrant garden-to-table program and inspired students to cook\, grow\, and share real food. Chef Ron now teaches farm-to-fork and cultural cooking classes across the region\, celebrating local farms\, seasonal ingredients\, and the joy of cooking together. \nStay tuned for future Masa classes taught by Chef Ron — Tamales\, Pupusas\, Enchiladas\, and more…

SUMMARY:Wild Weave with Willow
DESCRIPTION:Spend the day at 21 Acres with local basket weaver\, Erin Cox\, and learn a variety of basketry techniques while getting to know some of the weave-able plants that grow in the PNW.  \nAttention all adventurous weavers…who among you likes a little whimsy and is ready to let the willow speak to you? Who comes back from every hike or neighborhood walk with new natural goodies in their pockets? (a seed pod…cool rock…you know!) \nIf this is you…come make a wild weave treasure catcher. We’ll build our foundations using the random weave technique with rehydrated willow rods. Then it’s time to play. If you want to stick with ONLY locally farmed and forage materials we’ll have vines\, bark\, cedar cones\, cordage making supplies\, dried flowers and seed pods and other fun things to play with. If you want to branch out to other materials\, I have half a dozen different natural twines and some surprises to play with. \nEvery wild weave will be different\, so let your imagination go wild and tell your inner critic to be quiet! \nThe fun doesn’t end when you leave class…you now have a home for all your wild goodies. Decorate with flowers\, seedpods\, feathers\, mementos – whatever makes you happy. Even change them up with the season! \nI can’t wait to see what YOU create! \nThe maximum class size is 10 students\, minimum 6 students. Minimum age is 14 for this workshop. The workshop will be held in the downstairs meeting room next to the 21 Acres Farm Market. \nThe fee is $85. Click the link below to register directly with the teacher\, Erin Cox.  \nClass registration is NON-REFUNDABLE. However\, if you want to sell or give your spot to a friend\, I’m happy to welcome someone else in your place. Due to the nature of the projects (materials/soaking\, etc) and the small class sizes\, I’m unable to support refunds or credits. \nAbout your teacher: Erin Cox is a talented and knowledgeable weaver\, crafter and artist with a special reverence for plants. She’s also been a willow farmer since 2024\, when she joined the SnoValley Tilth Experience Farming Project in Carnation. She honors the cultural significance of farms\, which historically have provided much more than food\, including baskets\, trellises\, medicine\, wool\, and more. Her classes showcase a variety of unique weaving projects\, leveraging some plants that you’ll see here on the farm. SUMMARY:Cattail Wall-Hangings
DESCRIPTION:Spend the day at 21 Acres with local basket weaver\, Erin Cox\, and learn a variety of basketry techniques while getting to know some of the weave-able plants that grow in the PNW.  \nErin has been drawn to macrame for years. Many of the skills and projects can and do crossover with natural weaving. But a traditional macrame project with handwoven plant cordage instead of store-bought cotton rope would take a reeeeaaaallly long time to make. Super satisfying but way too long for a workshop. \nInsert shredded cattail – now we can make the background curtain in a flash and spend our time adding decorative twining\, knotting\, beads\, braiding and decorations on top. Everyone will learn the technique for making natural cordage\, a 5 strand flat braid\, and more! \nAll workshop materials have been harvested by hand sustainably and responsibly in the Puget Sound area. \nClass size max: 12 students | 6 minimum. Age minimum: 12 with accompanying adult (both attendees should purchase a ticket). The workshop will be held in the downstairs meeting room next to the 21 Acres Farm Market. \nThe fee is $71.60. Click the link below to register directly with the teacher\, Erin Cox.  \nClass registration is NON-REFUNDABLE. Details for the tour will be provided via Eventbrite after registration. \nWant to get your hands dirty and learn more? Register for an upcoming Volunteer Farm Steward event later this spring and work with 21 Acres staff on a variety of seasonal farm and restoration projects that build soil health and maintain the farm during the growing season. \nNote: The Farm Tour is not ADA Accessible. SUMMARY:Farm Tour: Focus on Dry Farming
DESCRIPTION:Dry farming is a water-smart\, climate-adapted growing practice here in the PNW\, and in this era of rising temperatures and extended periods of drought due to climate change\, dry-farmed produce offers an important opportunity to bolster local food systems and our home gardens.   \nFarm Manager\, Ansley Roberts\, will lead a special farm tour focused on the dry farming trials here at 21 Acres\, including tomatoes\, squash\, and dry beans. You’ll learn how farmers grow produce varieties that need zero irrigation and taste absolutely delicious.  \nIn-person tours of the 21 Acres Farm are a great way to explore how agroecology\, soil health and land stewardship can build resilient local food economies and support direct climate action. Join us and uncover what farming in the Sammamish Valley looks like. Bring your questions! \nClick the link to register for this free tour. Details will be provided via Eventbrite after registration. \nThe Farm Walk is not ADA Accessible. Dress for the weather; wearing boots is strongly recommended. \nCANCELLATION POLICY \nSafety is our first priority. If existing or anticipated conditions pose a moderate to high risk to visitors and staff\, we will make the decision to cancel this event. \nIn the event of cancellation\, registered attendees will be informed of cancellations by 21 Acres as soon as possible. Please make sure that the email and phone number you provide during registration are accurate. \nIf you are feeling sick\, we kindly ask that you respect the safety of yourself and others by not coming to campus. Send an email to generalinfo@21acres.org or call us at (425) 481-1500 if you are unable to attend this event. \n
