It was great to come together with our 21 Acres community to break ground and build a new greenhouse to house the 21 Acres farm nursery. It was a glorious sunny day and our enthusiastic group finished the frame of the structure just as it was starting to get dark, stopping only briefly for a delicious lunch provided by the 21 Acres kitchen. The structure now houses a rocket stove mass heater that was already partially built on the site.

The rocket stove utilizes a method of burning wood for heat that not only uses drastically less wood but also creates virtually no pollution. We are excited to finish the rocket stove with its final coat of clay cob and begin testing it to heat the greenhouse. The greenhouse with rocket stove will be a showcase of sustainable technology that can have many applications, including residential heating and cooking. Many thanks to our wonderful volunteers that spent your Saturday with us! We couldn’t have done it without you!

If you’re interested in learning more about rocket stoves and want to pitch in and help, we’ll be hosting another work party to finish ours soon. There are lots of other types of projects to participate in as well; this is how we learn as a community to grow, eat, and live more sustainably. Email volunteer@21acres.org to get involved!

Here’s a fun time lapse video of the project! Enjoy these images capturing progress of the day:
