February 2 is World Wetlands Day! It is a day to c February 2 is World Wetlands Day! It is a day to celebrate and protect these vital ecosystems and all that they do. Here in the Sammamish Valley, much of our food is grown on historic wetlands. While we can’t build them as well as nature can, restoring wetlands has a number of important benefits…
1. Flood control
2. Groundwater recharge
3. Habitat for wildlife
4. Increased biodiversity
5. Filter pollutants
6. Sequesters carbon
7. Nutrient cycling
And so much more!
.
We are actively restoring 5.7 acres of wetland on the 21 Acres property. 🌱 The wetlands surrounding our agricultural production areas are helping our farm to be more sustainable, biologically diverse, and resilient. 💪🏽
.
Our wetlands provide habitat for beneficial birds, and insects that help manage harmful pests on the farm. This allows us to have healthier crops without the use of pesticides. As you can see in the photos, wetlands also absorb a lot of water which can help control seasonal flooding. 🌊
.
We are excited to continue to steward our campus wetlands this year. Want to get involved? Join us for Farm Steward Saturdays starting April 1. More details coming soon!
