Krystal Wasson and Gretchen Johnson coordinated Earth Day activities and the many wonderful volunteers who worked across the 21 Acres Campus on this special day.

Earth Day was such a big day for us here at 21 Acres! Volunteers descended on campus on the morning of Saturday, April 21, and dove in to projects all across the property.

More than 100 people worked on pollinator beds, organizing the native plant nursery, removing invasive blackberries from wetlands, setting up three new raised beds in the herb garden, and cleaning up the food forest. Additionally, we had a great team who worked together to finish the rocket mass heater in the green house. (This provides warmth for tender seedlings to allow the farm to produce fresh produce for an additional 6-8 weeks in early spring and late fall. Our farmers are very happy!) We had volunteers in the kitchen preparing a tasty noontime meal and coordinating the potluck. And finally, a little-known fact, we also had UW student, Kristina Foltz, working indoors putting 50 new donated books on our library shelves. Come check out a book!

The morning was industrious to say the least. Then, together we shared an amazing meal outside on the terrace and enjoyed a wide variety of salads, smoked salmon, roasted red cabbage raab, shallots, and cauliflower. For dessert we indulged in yogurt, pie, cookies, and apple rhubarb crisp. The hummus and pita bread were a big hit and thank you Tsunami Van Winkle, for bringing the most beautiful Asian salad that is still being raved about in the days since.

Many hardy souls went back to work after lunch and all the projects wrapped up around 2:30- 3pm. What a wonderful day was had by all. The whole 21 Acres team extends a sincere thank you to everyone!
